If you’re experiencing hair loss for an unknown reason, you could be suffering from Alopecia Areata.

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder that attacks hair follicles, usually causing temporary hair loss on the scalp, face, and other areas of the body.

In most cases, hair falls out in small bundles around the size of a quarter. You may suddenly notice a lack of hair on your arms or scalp, leaving a smooth hairless patch of skin. Some patients also report changes to the shape, texture, and thickness of their nails. A pitted appearance and texture may appear, resulting in a rough or dented nail surface. That being said, symptoms often vary from case to case.

The condition is common in both men and women, usually under the age of 20. In most cases, the condition is apparent, because it develops quickly, over just a few days. People who spontaneously lose a few patches of hair usually can make a full recovery.

With this in mind, it’s never a bad idea to book a professional examination or consultation to pinpoint the ongoing issue. Parker Trichology Centre has an on-site full time experienced Trichologist who will conduct an in-depth interview and assessment of your symptoms and overall hair health.

Your doctor can carefully examine the scalp and while extracting a few strands of hair to be assessed by a lab. In extreme cases, when the condition is linked to other medical conditions, your doctor may perform a blood test. However, the symptoms of Alopecia Areata are often easily recognizable, so making a diagnosis is usually quick and straightforward.

Unfortunately, there is no official cure for Alopecia Areata, although there are some forms of treatment aimed at increasing the speed and effectiveness of hair re-growth.

The most common form of treatment is the use of corticosteroid topical treatments or injections which suppress the immune system. Doctors can also recommend using other medications which promote hair growth like Minoxidil, Anthralin, SADBE, and DPCP. Again, these medications may help with the regrowth of hair, but won’t prevent the formation of new bald patches.
