Sometimes, after a relaxing scalp massage, you get a great night of sleep and feel amazing the next day. That’s great! But that’s only one benefit to a scalp massage. There are a few more benefits for you and your hair when you get a scalp massage or when you give yourself a scalp massage. So, let’s talk about that!

Thicker, Voluminous Hair

If you’re a male and have been longing for thicker and more voluminous hair, a scalp massage regularly might be your answer! There was a study performed on 9 men for 24 weeks that showed that gently massaging your scalp for a few minutes every day produced thicker hair.

Hair Growth

If you’re tired of seeing your hair fall out all over the place, you should consider scalp massages as well. Multiple studies have shown that scalp massages regularly have reduced hair fall and promoted hair growth. This is due to massages strengthening follicles and stimulating growth.

Reducing Hair Loss caused by Alopecia

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes the hair to fall off in patches and sometimes, can result in total hair loss of the scalp. From patients who self-reported their findings, 69% of participants, both men and women, were able to regrow hair with regular massages.

How Often Should I Massage my Scalp?

Overall, the more often you can do it, the better. However, make it fit your schedule! This should be something that’s enjoyable and not a hassle. Whether it’s when you shower or when you’re sitting on the couch watching tv, you can do this almost anytime you’re still. Every day for a few minutes is ideal, but a few times a week will provide results as well.

The Steps

Here’s how to give yourself a scalp massage. Better yet, have someone like your spouse give you a scalp massage!

Step 1

Make sure your hair is down and accessory-free. Scalp massages can be performed on wet or dry hair.

Step 2

You can use your favorite hair oil. Apply a few drops to the tips of your fingers. This is the part of your hands that will be doing all the work, so the oil will have the best opportunity to reach your scalp by applying it to this point on your hands.

Step 3

Start at your temples on the side of your head with small, circular motions.

Step 4

Using slight pressure, pull the skin on your scalp upwards with your fingertips.

Step 5

Continue this process all over your head for a few minutes.
